Martha Ward
A look in Martha’s wardrobe

Styling always tells a story: clothing and accessories are the elements of a narrative that should always be new and inspired. Martha Ward tells us her story, one of excellent mentors and apparently normal interests, but with a unique twist. Of style and taste. With a particular affection for Tod's bags.

1. Tell me about your first encounter with Tod’s?
I was 11 and my stepmother had a very beautiful butterscotch colour leather tote, and the classic style and colour of it always stuck with me.

2. When you think of the Tod’s brand what thoughts and associations come to mind?
Classic, timeless, quality, style and exquisite craftsmanship. And Jackie O.

3. As an international style icon, which you are, how do you define style?
Style is not fashion, they are two different things. Everyone can be fashionable but not everyone can be stylish…. It is very specific. As Coco Chanel once said “Fashion changes, but style endures.”

4. How would you describe your style?
Either Parisian chic or granny chic. Depending on my mood.

5. Tell me about your work as a stylist. How did you start?
I began as a fashion assistant at Tatler magazine, with the greatest of women as my mentors (Kate Reardon, Natalie Massenet, Thea Green – all now huge success stories). And from the fashion cupboard I went freelance and worked my way from there.

6. Any special projects for the future?
I hope so! But nothing life-changing to speak of as I write this.

7. What does working with Tod’s mean for you?
It is a huge honour to be part of such an iconic brand, and one that has such a great story to tell. I think history is important. And Tod’s has such a reputable and fascinating history. I love the family association of the brand.

8. You wore several pieces from Tod’s Spring Summer Collection. What are your must-haves for the season?
The must-have for me are the python bags. Whether neutral or in a bold Tod’s colour. It’s all about snakeskin this season!

9. You were in Milan for Tod’s AW13 Women’s Collection. What are your must-haves for that season?
The dusty pink crocodile Sella bag is essential. It’s all about this shade of pink for Autumn-Winter. And one of the cross body bags in cream/coffee with the giant clasp.

10. You live in London. What are your favourite hotspots there?
Richmond Park for some wild walking. Brick Lane and Portobello Market for vintage and antiques. Borough Market for delicious fast food. Columbia Road for flowers on a Sunday morning. And 5 Hertford Street for hunkering down in front of a fire on any day (or night) of the week.
