Peter Cincotti – singer-songwriter and pianist – is a multifaceted artist, but most of all an acclaimed international music star. Peter is an explorer: in his journey through music, he has always expressed a personal style that combines different genres, such as pop, rock, blues and jazz, with profound conscious lyrics, achieving powerful results. Tod’s met Peter for an exclusive interview on the location of his new “Madeline” video taken from his latest album “Metropolis”, which was shot at Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan.

When did your passion for music start?
I started playing piano when I was 3 years old. My grandmother bought me a toy piano and I never stopped playing.

What and/or who inspires you and your music?
All kinds of things inspire me. And usually when you're looking for inspiration, it never comes. Most of the time it comes when I don't want it to. Like at 4 in the morning when I'm trying to get some sleep. So I have to get out of bed and go to the piano so I remember it in the morning. Unfortunately, I think I'm a slave to it.

The European tour to promote your new album “Metropolis” just ended. How was this experience?
We had a great tour. Over the last couple years I've been writing a lot and recording in the U.S, and also working on a theater project here in New York as well, so it was particularly gratifying to be on tour again and see so many people come out to the shows all over Europe. Can't wait to come back.

You have Italian origins and often come to Italy for your work. What kind of relationship do you have with this country?
The more I come, the less I want to leave! Italy is intoxicating. And given my origins, I do feel like a certain part of me is coming home every time I visit.

You filmed the video of the song “Madeline”, the first single in your new album, in Milan. What do you think about this city? Do you have any favorite place here?
Shooting the "Madeline" video was an experience I'll never forget. There were so many great people involved in the production, and the location of Villa Necchi couldn't be better. That was another place that was hard to leave! I wanted to move in!

Tell me about your first encounter with Tod’s?
My first encounter with Tod's was in the fall of last year at one of my shows in Milan. We've been in touch ever since.

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Tod’s brand?
I think of quality.

How would you describe your style?
Me. Whatever that is.

When you think about Italian style what comes to your mind? Which three adjectives would you use to describe Italian taste?
Classic but current. Traditional but cutting edge. To me Italian style has all elements, both from the past and the future.

What does New York as a city means to you?
New York is home. I'm not sure who I'd be or what music I'd create had I not be born and raised in New York. It has played a big role in my life.

What inspires you about New York?

Where is your favorite place in New York and why?
I have many favorite places, but if I had to pick one, East Harlem would be it because of what it represents to me. That is the area where my family came when they left Italy and came to America in the early 1900s. It is where my family stayed until I was born, and then the neighborhood changed a lot. But there are still some, although very few, reminders of that old Italian generation and tradition that is so important to me. And I see similarities when I come to Italy. Maybe that's why I keep coming back?
